What OEM means in shoes

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. In footwear it means you bring the design and the factory makes it. You supply a tech pack, reference sample or detailed brief; the factory develops patterns, sources materials, opens or adapts tooling and produces the shoe under your brand. The design belongs to you.

OEM suits brands that already know exactly what they want and need a shoe that no one else sells. It usually takes longer and costs more to start, because new outsole or midsole moulds may be needed.

What ODM means in shoes

ODM stands for Original Design Manufacturer. Here the factory has already designed the shoe. You choose a style from its range and adapt it: new colourways, your logo, a different mesh, insole or packaging. The base design and the moulds belong to the factory.

ODM is the fastest route to market. Because the sole tooling already exists, sampling is quicker and the minimum order is lower. Most importers and new private-label programs start here.

What private label means

Private label describes the commercial result rather than the development method: a product made by a manufacturer and sold under the buyer's brand. A private-label running shoe is usually built on an ODM style with the buyer's logo and packaging. Retail chains, distributors and online sellers use private label to build their own brand without running a design department.

How to choose

  • Testing a market or launching a first line: start with ODM or private label on an existing sole.
  • Need a distinct look but not new tooling: ODM with custom uppers, colours and branding.
  • Have a defined product and volume to support new moulds: OEM.

Many programs mix the routes: a few ODM styles for volume and one OEM hero style for identity.

Questions to ask the factory

  • Which parts of this style can be changed without new tooling?
  • Who owns the outsole and midsole moulds?
  • What is the minimum order per style and per colour?
  • Can the style be kept exclusive for my market, and on what terms?
